HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) cases have been rising across the country, particularly in Hyderabad. Initially, two children in Karnataka were found to have contracted the virus. Authorities confirmed that neither of them had traveled internationally. Subsequently, cases have also been reported in Gujarat and Chennai. As of recent updates, 11 HMPV cases were registered in Hyderabad during December, which has raised some concerns among the public.
11 HMPV Positive Cases Reported in Hyderabad
With the virus being more prevalent in China, there are growing fears among people that it could become a pandemic like COVID-19. However, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and other medical experts have clarified that HMPV is not a new virus. They stated that the virus has been circulating for the past 50-60 years. Experts assure that with proper precautions, HMPV can be managed like a common cold or cough.
According to tests conducted by the Mani Microbiology Lab in Hyderabad, samples were collected from 229 people with respiratory issues in December 2024, out of which 11 tested positive for HMPV. The lab confirmed that all of these individuals have been discharged after treatment. Many people visited hospitals at the end of last year with symptoms like cold, cough, and other seasonal illnesses. Though these symptoms are common, they were observed to persist longer than usual.
The ICMR is advising the public to take precautions, especially for young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. If symptoms like cold and cough appear, individuals are urged to consult a doctor rather than ignore the symptoms. Medical experts also reassure that there is no need for unnecessary panic about HMPV, as with appropriate precautions, the virus can be controlled effectively.
